    L
    ast year we dug this interesting rock out of a sand & dirt-covered mine dump at a small unnamed prospect in the area.
    In our daylight photos the rock has many vugs and a few veins of hemimorphite in a matrix of tan-colored carbonates (photos #7 & 8).
    The carbonates found in the area of the Tres Hermanas Mountains have either deposited in sedimentary layers and fluoresce orange & blue (SW), or form in a calcite crystalline structure & fluoresce bright red due to the presence of manganese in this area.
    Finding unusual rocks like this one is why the Mahoney Mining Area is one of our favorite rockhounding locations.
    Under short wave lamp the
    hemimorphite glows
    royal blue
    and the carbonate matrix
    glows
    orange
    (calcite/caliche),
    pale blue
    (aragonite), and a small patch of
    red
    (manganocalcite) in photos #1-3.  The aragonite
    phosphoresces
    briefly after the SW lamp is turned off.
    Using our long wave Convoy S2 flashlight, the carbonate matrix also glows
    orange
    (photos #4-6).  Most of the aragonite in photo #6 glows a
    pale blue/cream
    color.
    Photo #9 was taken from the desert collecting area looking toward one of the taller mine dumps at Mahoney, the Comfort Mine.
