Description
This is a medium-sized,un
polished
half of a thunderegg from Baker Ranch, south of Deming, NM. It has an outer shell of pinky-tan rhyolite and an interior of 4 different patches of red & blue agate
. Inside the largest agate patch is a small "window" of white agate with narrow vertical stripes, which are water marks that formed as the center agate window was created.
Photo #3 was taken in daylight with the specimen wet, showing what it would look like when polished, and photo #4 was taken with it dry.
Using our long wave Convoy S2 flashlight, most of the red agate glows a dull
green
, but the small agate window, plus the narrow bands around it, glows a bright
yellow-orange
&
pale purple
(photo #1). This LW response is quite rare and, apparently, unique to some of the Baker Ranch specimens in the Deming, NM area. The little "window" of color is a nice bonus that we rarely see. Was it deposited at a different time than the rest of the agate? Why is it shaped like a rough pentagon, rather than a more rounded shape?
Under short wave lamp, the red agate patches glow from bright to dim
green,
the little "window" is mostly non-fluorescent, and the rhyolite glows a
dull red
(photo #2).
Photo #5 shows the huge mine from the north rim, while Ken digs through the mine dumps several years ago in photo #6.
Weighs 4.4 oz. & measures 3.0 x 2.5 x 1.0 inches (#BR-65).
